If you know me, you know I love music—especially Hip Hop. I also value fitness, clean eating, and the long game of health. But since the pandemic, I’ve been locked in an ongoing battle with the bulge, working toward a goal of losing over 50 pounds.
My commute and demanding work schedule made consistency feel impossible. By the time I got home, I was exhausted. And after putting in another 2–3 hours of prep for the next work day, I had nothing left in the tank. I’d start a workout routine only to fizzle out when the results didn’t come fast enough. Boredom crept in. Discouragement followed.
Then I started making playlists. Not just for workouts—but for writing, for walking, for reflection and self-talk. Music that matched my mood, energy, and intentions. Eventually, I curated specific playlists for different types of workouts:
- Cardio: upbeat and playful
- Calisthenics: confident and hype
- Boxing: powerful and unapologetic
- Pilates: graceful and focused
- Breathwork/Stretching: peaceful and clear-minded
Did playlists magically melt the pounds away? No. But they made me want to move again. They brought joy back to the process. They helped me stay present, push through, and experiment with how my body responds to different sounds and rhythms.
Since June 2025, I’ve been exercising consistently at least three times a week. Today’s gym session? A win. I doubled my incline and running speed from yesterday—and felt strong doing it.
So no, don’t underestimate the power of a playlist. Sometimes, the right song is the spark you need to show up for yourself.
